During the second quarter of this year, six specialized banking seminars were held at the institute’s premises in Amman, and are as follows:
- Forwards, Futures and Options: Applications for Hedging and Trading Seminar:
This seminar was held during 11/4-14/4/2010 in cooperation with DNA Training and Consulting / Lebanon and it was attended by (21) trainees from different local banks and financial institutions.
This seminar explained different aspects of forwards, futures and options contracts, especially in terms of pricing mechanizms and their application in the risk management field. It is also clarified asset categories of stocks, currencies and commodities; as well as how they are interrelated and the characteristics of each category of these assets. Furthermore, the seminar dealt with the practical aspects of the basis of affordability and measuring the return and risk through actual case study models along with various exercises.
- Business Continuity Planning Seminar:
This seminar was held during 27/4-29/4/2010 in cooperation with MIS Training Institute / UK and it was attended by (19) trainees from different local banks and financial institutions.
The seminar focused on the importance of business continuity and why should central banks be concerned, as well as what risks and threats that might be exposed to business and good practices for managing operational risk, in addition to explaining standards of action plans and ways of business process continuity in the financial institutions.
- Auditing Risk Management and Basel II Seminar:
This seminar was held during 10/5-13/5/2010 in cooperation with MIS Training Institute / UK and it was attended by (26) trainees from different local banks and financial institutions.
The seminar introduced many subjects of whom the most important was the decisions of the Basel II Committee, and how to apply auditing mechanizms on operational, credit and market risks in accordance with Basel II as well as manage them in the best way possible.Group work and actual case studies techniques were used to increase attendees understanding .
- International Banking Crises 2007-2010 Seminar:
This seminar was held during 18/5-20/5/2010 in cooperation with Progressive Banking Solutions / Ireland and it was attended by (7) trainees from different local banks and financial institutions.
The seminar focused on the main causes that could lead to global financial crises, especially in the banking sector. The seminar explained the reasons behind the bankruptcy of the largest global corporations as well as reasons of recent banking crises, and the role of banks, managements in managing and reducing the crises occurrence possibilities, and in the case that a crisis could occur, the instructor provided methods and methodologies that the banks management could use and performed. The instructor even selected a number of countries, including Jordan, and viewed those methods, which the governments used to control the banks in light of the global financial crisis. The final part of the seminar provided the participants with some abbreviations on the procedures, policies, regulations, and regulatory requirements that are expected to be implemented in the future to ensure minimizing of the possibilities and thus, reduce the reoccurrence of such crises or even mitigate them in the event they occur.
- Risk Management with Focus on Credit Risk Management Seminar
This seminar was held during 13/6-15/6/2010 in cooperation with Progressive Banking Solutions / Ireland and it was attended by (19) trainees from local banks and financial institutions.
The seminar contained many of the advanced topics related to all aspects of credit risk management and how to reduce it, as well as the philosophy of the decisions of the Basel Committee and their recent proposed amendments on Basel II. The seminar enriched the participants’ awareness about the concepts of risks, taking into consideration that its key aspects were given in a general overview; whereas those aspects that dealt with credit were given in a more detail. Group work used to study some practical actual cases to test the participants’ understanding of the information given within the seminar.
Its worth to mention that the convention of this seminar was of a great benefit to the participants especially concerning the global financial crisis. Credit risk is one of the topmost important risks of banks in terms of volume of credit, the possibility of fulfillment and concentration. Therefore, there remains a need currently, and now more than ever to manage credit risk specifically in addition to the focus on governance and institutional basis for granting credit.
- Trade Finance and Foreign Operations Seminar:
This seminar was held from 27/6-1/7/2010 in cooperation with Global Finance and Derivatives Associates / USA and it was attended by (12) trainees from different local banks and financial institutions.
The seminar focused on the central issues of trade finance in the current period, as well as the role of guarantees in this area and how to analyze their risks. The seminar introduced and discussed many topics, such as: International payment system; documentary credits and export credits; the factors that drive the demand for trade finance and foreign trade operations; structuring financial and trading transactions; the mechanizms used for documentary credit and letters of guarantee, The seminar provided participants with skills of assessing and managing various types of variables that have an effect on risks of import and export operations.
